Thanksgiving Sunday

It was another day in the blessed church of the Foursquare Gospel Church Amuwo Odofin. The annual fasting program which happens in January, came to an end in Grand style as we all danced and sang praises to God in Thanksgiving.  Pastor G Ofuani clad on his Agbada preached on Attracting Uncommon Reward. He talked about what we as Christians can do to attract uncommon reward. With examples from malachi about tithing and Some from Abraham, he showed how we can get uncommon reward through giving. After that was praise all the way as each group came put to dance in Thanksgiving. The best group, The Youths got Ten thousand naira from the Pastor.  Feed your eyes with more pictures.

What Are You Willing to Risk?

by Mark Altrogge

What kind of risks are you willing to take for Jesus?

In the book of Ruth, Naomi hatches a plan to see her widowed daughter Ruth get a husband who can give her children. She tells Ruth to spruce herself up and present herself to Boaz, a relative quite a bit older than Ruth, who could, as a “kinsman redeemer,” marry her. Ruth had been working as a field hand for Boaz, and he’d shown great kindness to her, but shown no interest in marrying this young foreign widow.

Naomi tells Ruth to go to the threshing floor on the east side of town at night, where Boaz would be sleeping next to and guarding his pile of grain, uncover his feet, lie down next to him, and wait for him to tell her what to do.

These were days when “everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 21:25). It was risky for a young woman to cross town alone at night. It was a huge risk to lie down next to an older man in the dark. Would he take advantage of her? But Ruth makes her way to the threshing floor, and in the darkness manages to locate Boaz asleep by his grain. She gently lifts his garment back exposing his feet, then lies down.

In the middle of the night, something startles Boaz, he turns over and – there’s a woman at his feet! In the darkness he can’t see who it is so he cries out “Who are you?”

“And she answered, ‘I am Ruth, your servant. Spread your wings over your servant, for you are a redeemer.’” (Ruth 3:9)

“Spread your wings over your servant” meant “spread the edge of your garment over me,” which was a commitment of marriage, like giving an engagement ring. Ruth didn’t wait for Boaz to tell her what to do as Noami had advised, but blurted out a marriage proposal!

Service to Others as Thanksgiving to God

by Alan Knox

Recently, I saw a verse ofScripture that left me scratching my head. First, I’ll give the context and the entire passage.

In 2 Corinthians 9, Paul is writing to the church in Corinth to make plans to pick up the money that they have been collecting to help the church in Judea during a time of famine. Paul has heard that the Corinthians have collected a large sum of money, and he is praising the church for their generosity. (It is during this praise that Paul writes the famous line, “God loves a cheerful giver.”)

At the end of this passage, Paul reminds the Corinthians that God will bless them for their generosity, and that, also, God will be praised because of their generosity. Paul writes:

He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for all your generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. By their approval of this service, they will glorify God because of your submission flowing from your confession of the gospel of Christ, and the generosity of your contribution for them and for all others, while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you. Thanks be to God for his inexpressible gift! (2 Corinthians 9:10-15 ESV)

The verse that left me scratching my head (when I read it in another source by itself) was 2 Corinthians 9:12:

For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many thanksgivings to God. (2 Corinthians 9:12 ESV)

The Condition of Our Minds

But we have the mind of Christ (the Messiah) and
do hold the thoughts (feelings and purposes) of
His heart.
—1 Corinthians 2:16B
I reached the curb in front of the airport, where
my friend would pick me up. I was calm and
relaxed and thought of the great conversation
we would have. To my surprise, she wasn’t there
yet. That was odd because she’s the kind of
person who is never late for anything. I remained
calm and peaceful. I spotted what I thought was
her car and took a step forward, but the car
went past me, and there was a stranger in it.
Not more than three minutes had passed, but I
realized I was anxious and worried. What had
happened to her? Had she been in an accident?
Did she forget me? From calmness to anxiety in
less than three minutes, and nothing had
changed—nothing except my mind. Worried
thoughts struggled inside me.
I pulled out my cell phone and started to dial,
when I heard a car honking, as she pulled up to
the curb. My mind shifted once again to
calmness, even joyfulness. How quickly my
emotions had shifted in that short period of time.
My mind had quickly changed when my
circumstances did. Sometimes I find it easy to
hear God speak...and to believe without any
difficulty. Yet at other times, worry and anxiety
push their way into my mind. The Bible says we
are to walk by faith and not by sight, but that
day at the airport, I was definitely being led by
what I saw. When we worry, we are not walking
in faith and trusting God.
For a long period of my life, I had a critical,
suspicious, and judgmental mind. That may seem
normal for many nonbelievers, but I was a
Christian. I was going along with the same
thinking and mindset that I had known for years.
It was normal to me—it was just the way I was.
For years, I had no awareness that my wrong
thinking was causing any problems.
Because no one had taught me, I didn’t know I
could do anything to change my thought life. It
simply had not occurred to me. No one had
taught me about the proper condition for the
believer’s mind. God offers us a new way to
think and a new way to live.
God has called us to renew our minds (see
Romans 12:2). For most of us, it is an ongoing
process. We don’t control our thinking all at one
time.
One day I read 1 Corinthians 2:16, where Paul
says we have the mind of Christ. What could he
have meant? I pondered that verse for days. I
concluded that for us to have the mind of Christ
doesn’t mean we’re sinless or perfect. It does
mean we begin to think the way Christ thinks. If
we have His mind, we think on those things that
are good and honorable and loving.
I confessed to God how many times my mind
had focused on the ugly, the mean, and the
harsh.
In 1 Corinthians 2:14, Paul wrote, But the natural,
non-¬spiritual man does not accept or welcome or
admit into his heart the gifts and teachings and
revelations of the Spirit of God, for they are folly
(meaningless nonsense) to him…because they are
spiritually discerned and estimated and
appreciated…. Yes, I thought, that is exactly how it
works. The natural mind—even that of the
Christians whose minds are tampered with by
Satan—doesn’t grasp what God is doing. Those
things seem foolish.
We must remind ourselves that we have Christ’s
mind—we have the ability to think loving and
caring thoughts. We can defeat Satan’s attacks.
Holy God, I want to live with the mind of Christ. I
ask You to enable me to think positive, loving,
caring thoughts about myself and about others.
Help me to see and think on the good things in life
and not the bad. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Beyond Sunday: The Lord Is My Light

by

[Editor's Note: Beyond Sunday is a Monday refresher to start your week.]

Focus Verse:

The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? - Psalms 27:1

Classic Commentary:

David’s subjects called him the light of Israel, 2 Samuel 2:17. And he was indeed a burning and a shining light: but he owns that he shone, as the moon does, with a borrowed light; what light God darted upon him reflected upon them: The Lord is my light.

God is a light to his people, to show them the way when they are in doubt, to comfort and rejoice their hearts when they are in sorrow. It is in his light that they now walk on in their way, and in his light they hope to see light for ever. "He is my salvation, in whom I am safe and by whom I shall be saved.’’

"He is the strength of my life, not only the protector of my exposed life, who keeps me from being slain, but the strength of my frail weak life, who keeps me from fainting, sinking, and dying away.’’ God, who is a believer’s light, is the strength of his life, not only by whom, but in whom, he lives and moves.

In God therefore let us strengthen ourselves.

(Adapted from Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible - Complete)

A Thought to Keep
Rather than rely on mere human knowledge and strength, Christians rely on God who gives divine light, salvation, strength, and courage.
